The Driving Theory Test
This has two parts to it, the first is multi-choice test and the second is known as the hazard awareness test.

The multi-choice section is made up of 50 multi-choice questions. To answer these questions correctly you will need a good knowledge of the Highway Code.

You will have fifty seven minutes to answer all the questions using a touch screen computer. If your final score is below 43 you you fail. Sample the theory test with our mock test. This site has tests that use official test questions.

After the theory test has finished you will be allowed a three minute break after which the hazard awareness test will begin. This starts with a video tutorial which will show you how to take the test.

The test comprises of fourteen video clips all shot from a car drivers point of view and lasting a minute or so. The test judges your capacity to anticipate hazards as they develop. The sooner you see a hazard develop the more points you score. The pass mark is 44 from 75.

The theory test costs £28.50. Both sections must be passed in order to pass the test overall.

Show Me, Tell Me Test
At the start of the practical driving test you take the show me, tell me test. The test is designed to test you in basic car maintenance. In order to pass you will need to answer two questions correctly. See the questions and answers.

Practical Driving Test
To pass this test you must demonstrate that you have a good understanding of the Highway code and the skills needed to drive safely on different types of roads and in different traffic situations. You will also have to perform two out of the four reversing manoeuvres. You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Whilst taking the practical test if you score more than 15 minor faults or commit a dangerous or serious fault you will fail.

Both parts of your provisional licence (photo card and paper counter document) If you have the old type paper licence you will also have to bring a valid passport. No other form of photo identification will be accepted.

The test costs £42.00 on a week day or £58.00 over the weekend.
